Maltoberfest 8: Menace II Sobriety

What happens when you combine Octoberfest and Tacoma?  Maltoberfest!  Malt liquor served in a building shaped like a teapot.  What a party!

The press called us "Olympia's favorite local street band" and "utterly delightful" and said that "you'd have to see 'em to understand."  True dat!

ARA opened for a show with the fabulous Bucharest Drinking Team and Vana Mazi. On one song we all played together, somehow squeezing onto the stage of the Olympia Ballroom.

Mel Swartz Memorial

Mel Swartz was one of the stalwarts of the Friday peace vigil in Olympia that Artesian Rumble has played weekly for years.  When he passed away at the age of 82, the Arkestra was invited to play his memorial service reception.  Since this was a celebration of his life, and there was a request for New Orleans tunes, our costume call was for "Dixieland Festive".

Roller Derby Halftime

The Oly Rollers skated against the London Rollergirls, and Artesian Rumble was there to play the British national anthem (funny, it sounds just like "My Country Tis of Thee") and the halftime entertainment.

Pay no attention to that shirt, we cheered for the home team, honest!

KAOS Radio

Seamus and David represented the band on KAOS' radio show, Spin the Globe.  They played some tracks we'd recorded in the studio earlier that week.  Listen here (end of first hour, beginning of second)

A gift of a poem

We received this poem, hand typed by a poet at the Farmer's Market during our trip to HONK TX, was a gift from our fabulous host.
down by the riverside
spit flow through polished brass
diggin' through the muddy bank
I found justice
didn't need no sound
couldn't nobody be found down here
before the sweet trill of notes
there was me
I imagined the way to peace
sunshine
I need to hitch a ride
wanna go home
missin' the music of my people
'cause your love is ample compensation
fillin' bellies like hungry minds
fully intendin' world reconciliation
by the mouth of the river
a road it grew
waves of melodies
carryin' me to you for Rumble Arkestra
love April
